The Annex Infill
Situated in the heart of The Annex, Toronto, this project is a sophisticated exercise in urban density and architectural dialogue. The residence stands as a contemporary intervention between historic Victorian neighbors, respecting their vertical rhythm while asserting a modern identity through a monolithic timber facade.
The design utilizes a narrow, deep lot to create a series of stacked experiences. A dramatic, asymmetrical roofline allows for a hidden clerestory window that tracks the sun throughout the day, ensuring the deep interior plan remains luminous. The "atmosphere" is defined by the tension between the warm, natural cedar exterior and a hyper-minimalist interior of white oak, soft linens, and blackened steel accents. By elevating the primary living spaces, the house captures views of the Annex’s mature tree canopy, providing a private sanctuary in one of Toronto’s most vibrant cultural hubs.
